Simon Clapham

Simon is a senior insurance executive with over 45 years of global experience across the UK and U.S., including the Lloyd’s market, where he has worked as both a broker and underwriter. He served as Active Underwriter of Syndicate 800 and 2987, a composite syndicate including all classes underwritten and proposed to be underwritten by Santam. Simon has held senior positions, including membership of the Lloyd’s Market Board and various Lloyd’s committees, and represented Lloyd’s in R&R presentations in the U.S. alongside Sir David Rowland. He led the Marine, Space, War & Terror Division at Liberty Specialty Markets and later established and ran its Underwriting Performance Management function, overseeing 60 classes and 300+ underwriters. He subsequently served as Chief Underwriting Officer at Aon Underwriting Managers, Aon’s MGA, responsible for ACT and all in-house binders. Most recently, he founded and launched a new augmented underwriting MGA, Avatar, which began trading in 2025. Simon has now joined Santam as Chief Underwriting Officer and Active Underwriter of Syndicate 1918.
